Abstract

Statistical parameters produced by “eigenvalue” analysis of axial orientation data are related to till fabric types and fabric-forming processes. If a till fabric has a preferred plane with a statistically significant dip, the plane will probably dip upglacier, while the preferred orientation of stone long axes may be either parallel or transverse to the ice movement direction. If there is no significant dip, it is thus unlikely that the direction or even the trend of ice movement can be inferred from the fabric data alone. In flow tills, the fabric will be oriented with respect to the direction of flow, which may be unrelated to the direction of ice movement.
