Abstract

CH 3I adsorption on plain and silver-exchanged molecular sieves (Ag +MSs) was investigated under various conditions of humidity and temperature. The reaction products formed in the interaction of CH 3I over these samples were also evaluated to understand the basic steps involved in the process. In the presence of adsorbed moisture, CH 3I was found to react over Ag +MSs to form mainly CH 3OH and a small amount of CH 3OCH 3. For dehydrated Ag +MSs, hydrocarbons and iodine were formed, their yields depending on the matrix temperature. X-ray photoelectron studies revealed that silver sites are responsible for the dissociation of CH 3I. A mechanism explaining the formation of the different reaction products is discussed. The effects of γ irradiation on the CH 3I adsorption behaviour was also evaluated under various experimental conditions.
