Abstract
AbstractA perturbation analysis is used to describe the initial intensification of a baroclinic temperature field by the shearing action of an upper‐level transverse wave. The perturbation parameter ε is the ratio of the across‐front to along‐front length scales. The interaction of the horizontal shear of the large‐scale wave with the horizontal temperature gradient is found to generate a vertical velocity field, which is steady in time to O(ε2). Conditions are sought for the formation of anafronts and katafronts.
