Abstract
Using exponential rigidity spectra for solar cosmic ray protons and alpha particles, it is shown that the presence of alpha particles increases the intensity ratio I(λ5577) I(λ3914) in polar-glow aurora and, for a constant composition, steepening of rigidity spectra has the same effect. Representative values for I(λ5577) I(λ3914) show that variations in composition and spectral shape in the course of solar cosmic ray events, individually, produce changes of comparable magnitude in the intensity ratio.
