Abstract

Abstract This paper introduces a three-dimensional finite element model of a tire with a detailed tread block structure to more accurately describe the stress distribution in the tire/ground contact area. Because of the importance of properly modeling the contact, several preliminary studies are detailed. First, the frictional contact between a rib and the ground is presented using a plane strain model. In particular, the edge effects are studied. Second, a combined experimental and numerical method for determining the coefficient of friction between a rubber block and a glass plate is described. A friction law is developed which includes the well-known dependence of the coefficient of friction on the normal stress. Finally, the three-dimensional tire model is discussed and results are given.
