Abstract

Exchange reactions of cyclopentane and methane with deuterium have been studied with Co, Ni, Ru, Rh, Pd, Ir and Pt catalysts. All the metals studied are rather similar in their behaviour, the most pronounced difference being between Pd and Pt on the one hand and all other metals on the other. A more detailed analysis of the data fully confirms Kemball's idea, that facile formation of metal-carbon multiple bonds is an essential feature of the metals with high catalytic activity for hydrogenolysis.
