Abstract

Redescriptions of five Berlese species of Macrocheles are presented, and synonymies are established for M. elimatus (= M. inornatus Evans and Hyatt) and M. longipes (= M. nemontanus Ryke and Meyer). Macrocheles hirsutissima Berlese sensu Evans and Hyatt (1963) is redefined as a new species (Macrocheles laciniatus), and M. hirsutissima is redescribed. Macrocheles spinipes Berlese, which is phoretic on a phytophagous scarab, is redescribed and compared with M. grossipes Berlese, a closely related, co-occurring coprophilous species. Finally, M. peregrinus Krantz is discussed in terms of its possible synonymy with M. aethiopicus Berlese, originally described as a subspecies of M. alecto.
