Abstract
The off-diagonal elements of the intermediate matrices of the bordering method (or of the mathematically equivalent optimal elimeination method) are interpreted as Gaussian multipliers of submatrices of the inverse matrix. On the basis of this interpretation, sufficient conditions are found for the growth of the off-diagonal elements to be zero or bounded.
