  • Cunjian Bi + 3 more

Background: The outbreak of COVID-19 has seriously threatened the health of people around the world. To prevent the spread of the epidemic, Chinese universities have implemented closed management of campuses. The implementation of restrictive measures has gradually caused changes in the quality of sleep and the psychological state of college students. In addition, college students are faced with the dual pressure of employment and study, and the psychological pressure is huge. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate sleep and depressive symptoms among college students. Methods: Using the method of stratified cluster sampling, 6695 college students were selected from three universities in Jiangxi, Anhui, and Xinjiang provinces from April to May 2022. The Chinese version of the Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) and the self-rating depression scale (SDS) were used for the survey. Hierarchical logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the relationship between the PSQI and the SDS. Results: Overall, during the outbreak of COVID-19, 69.0% of males and 73.5% of females had poor sleep quality among Chinese college students and the detection rate of depressive symptoms was 43.6% for males and 47.8% for females, respectively. Taking students with good sleep quality as references, after controlling for covariates, hierarchical logistic regression shows that Chinese college students with poor sleep quality have a higher OR value (OR = 12.0, 95%CI: 10.2~14.1, p < 0.001), especially in males (OR = 43.8, 95%CI:30.2~63.6, p < 0.001). For both males and females, the OR value of college students with the following characteristics was higher: rural college students (males, OR = 50.32, 95%CI: 32.50–77.93; females, OR = 8.03, 95%CI: 6.45–9.99), overweight college students (males, OR = 62.17, 95%CI: 19.47–198.53; females, OR = 16.67, 95%CI: 6.48–42.88), and college students drinking sugar-sweetened beverages (males, OR = 59.00, 95%CI: 36.96–94.18; females, OR = 8.16, 95%CI: 6.63–10.05) (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Poor sleep quality is associated with depressive symptoms among Chinese college students, especially college males. Our research suggests that it is necessary to consider the improvement of sleep quality and depressive symptoms among college students during the COVID-19 epidemic.

Analysis of the Influence of Extracurricular Knowledge on College Students’ Values Based on Knowledge Mapping Theory
  • Jan 1, 2020
  • Ying Zhou

As the main force of the future society, college students are deeply concerned by the cultivation and development of their values. However, the cultivation of college students’ values is mostly at the present stage. In addition to extracurricular activities, college students are exposed to a variety of things, which affects the values of college students as much as the classroom. Therefore, the cultivation of values cannot be limited to the classroom. The influence of extracurricular knowledge on the values of college students is also extremely important. This paper analyzes the influence of college students’ extracurricular knowledge on values based on knowledge graph theory. Research shows that the influence of extracurricular knowledge on college students’ values is a double-edged sword, which has both positive and negative effects. Whether it is negative or positive, it depends on the values that college students choose to be exposed to outside the classroom. That is to say, the influence of extracurricular knowledge on college students’ values depends on the values of extracurricular knowledge itself.

  • Shuang Guo

Internet subculture has novel forms and diverse contents, providing college students with a free space to vent their emotions, release stress, and seek recognition. It has a strong appeal to young college students and affects the formation and change of college students' values. In terms of the formation of college students' beliefs and its impact on faith education, Internet subculture has a dual aspect. It not only has a positive role in promoting the transformation of faith education in communication methods and promoting the advancement of communication content with the times, but it can also produce deconstruction and resistance to the orientation of mainstream faith values. Negative effect. In-depth disclosure of the impact of Internet subculture on college students' faith education, and then proposing corresponding countermeasures, has become an important topic in deepening and innovating the research on college students' faith education in the Internet era. We should change our thinking, change the problem perspective into the advantage perspective, and look at Internet subculture and its impact rationally. Starting from the four aspects of society, cyberspace, universities and college students themselves, we should build an educational synergy to lead the healthy development of Internet subculture, standardize its communication platform, give full play to the positive impact of Internet subculture, and weaken its negative impact. In order to deal with Internet sub-culture provide targeted countermeasures to influence the values of college students.

The research on identifying college students’ psychological crises can assist college administrators in better understanding of students’ psychological changes and planning of intervention measures ahead of time to ensure college students’ mental health. When confronted with unexpected events or major setbacks and difficulties, people experience psychological crises, which they can neither avoid nor solve using their own resources and stress methods. This paper proposes a method of college students’ psychological crisis identification based on data mining technology to solve the problems that exist in the process of identifying psychological crises in college students and to improve the correct rate of identifying psychological crises in college students. In comparison to other technologies, data mining can uncover the link between students’ psychological problems and their basic information, as well as the main causes of psychological problems, using statistical data.

Social Entrepreneurship in the cocoa industry in West Africa
  • Nov 7, 2024
  • Milande Maria Busquet

This dissertation examines the role of social entrepreneurship in creating social value in international value chains. The research focuses specifically on addressing labor issues in the cocoa value chain in West Africa and the influence of local communities in creating (social) value. Through qualitative case studies and fieldwork in Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana, the complexity surrounding labor issues is highlighted and a local perspective is offered on issues of child labor and (social) interventions in international value chains. Various theoretical perspectives are used to explore the above issues. The Global Value Chain (GVC) perspective describes farmers and children as production factors, and child labor as a negative externality of low income. The Sustainable livelihood Approach (SLA) provides a local perspective and describes farmers and children as family and community members. Work on cocoa farms is part of a wide range of activities based on rural upbringing, with advantages and disadvantages. A broader lack of access to capitals plays a role in child labor. Alternative livelihood and development opportunities for children are a more fruitful discussion than the absence/presence of child labor. This thesis furthermore identifies a process of community bricolage—the influence of local community dynamics in creating (social) value and exchanging livelihood resources, through norms and values that apply in the different communities. Finally, this thesis evaluates social value creation and labor issues through a capability lens, in which freedom and individual human choice are central. This perspective distinguishes between structures that create or block freedoms, and the ultimate evaluation of what is valuable to an individual. This leads to the identification of different roles that social entrepreneurship can have regarding social value creation in international value chains: (1) Facilitating global discourses on child labor. This includes the integration of local perspectives and values, with a focus on children's well-being and children's developmental opportunities (2) Participation in value chains by changing structures, creating opportunities, and removing barriers for other actors (e.g. farmers) to create value and generate a living income (3) Mobilizing stakeholders within and outside value chains to address labor challenges and facilitate social change and access to resources (4) Navigating and facilitating the co-creation of social value by other active actors in the value chain, including communities, farmers, and children themselves (5) Assessing existing institutions (including international treaties, resolutions, and other forms of (soft) legislation) and renegotiating them to include all value systems of the parties involved

Hip-Hop Culture in College Students' Lives: Elements, Embodiment, and Higher Edutainment ed. by Emery Petchauer (review)

  • Wilma J Henry

Reviewed by: Hip-Hop Culture in College Students' Lives: Elements, Embodiment, and Higher Edutainment ed. by Emery Petchauer Wilma J. Henry Hip-Hop Culture in College Students' Lives: Elements, Embodiment, and Higher Edutainment. Emery Petchauer (Editor). New York, NY: Routledge, 2012, 130 pages, $35.95 (softcover) Hip-Hop Culture in College Students' Lives encourages new critical thought and analysis among educators, campus personnel and researchers regarding the value of hip-hop culture in enhancing college students' learning and development. Unveiled through an artistic approach to inquiry, a portrait is presented of how students who create hip-hop integrate its ideology, aesthetics and practices into their college lives. In chapter 1, Petchauer traces the trajectory of hip-hop from its advent in the Bronx during the early 1970s to its current day arrival on college campuses. He lays out several perspectives relative to conflicting views of hip-hop, which higher education scholars have used in describing hip-hop among college students. Additionally, he argues college personnel's misperceptions about hip-hop have created misunderstanding regarding its value in students' lives. The author advocates for a broad artistic approach from which to view, analyze and apply hip-hop culture. Chapter 2 describes the method employed in this study. Using a phenomenological approach, the author conducted a series of in-depth interviews to explore the cipher (i.e., hip-hop spaces and places) of college students at three diverse higher education institutions in the U.S. Central to the investigation is the concept of hip-hop collegians (a subculture of college students from diverse gender, socioeconomic, and ethnic/racial backgrounds, immersed in hip-hop culture, and who intertwine hip-hop with their college experiences). World view is presented as the conceptual framework used to contextualize how hip-hop exists in students' lives and how they make it relevant to education. Chapter 3 introduces the reader to the underground (the diverse spaces, places and artistic ways students create hip-hop on, off and around campus), which is an integral part of the college experiences of hip-hop collegians. Students share that hip-hop affects every aspect of their identity from the music they listen and dance to, to interactions with others or how they approach learning. The author contends that campus environments that do not acknowledge and take advantage of the educational value of hip-hop culture may encourage students to seek it out in surrounding areas off-campus. In chapter 4, Petchauer discusses how hip-hop collegians integrate aesthetic forms of hip-hop in their academic disciplines using many of the same strategies and techniques of hip-hop artistry. Several scenarios were described relative to the clash that sometimes exists between aesthetic forms of hip-hop and traditional teaching philosophies. According to the author, these conflicts may impede student learning, engagement, and emotional health. The author argues that educators would be better positioned to serve the needs of hip-hop collegians if they developed a deeper understanding of the genre and worked to integrate the ways in which these students experience hip-hop into the structure of higher education. Both chapters 5 and 6 primarily examine the habits and practices of hip-hop collegians. Readers are invited into the lives of students who approach their education by applying the [End Page 222] concepts of edutainment (the combination of education and entertainment), kinetic consumption (affective responses used to engage with the world) and sampling (taking the best from a wide variety of sources and creating something new and relevant) to their campus lives. Petchauer also suggests that some students may develop a level of critical consciousness from hip-hop while others may not. Thus, he challenges educators to rethink hip-hop as a position from which students may be able to develop critical consciousness. Campus personnel should focus on the opportunity to help students draw explicit connections between the content and production of hip-hop and the political and social realities that exist in the world. The book concludes in chapter 7 with a model designed to assist educators in understanding hip-hop collegians on their campuses. The model integrates the key elements that emerged in the lives of the hip-hop collegians studied...

  • Yu Hong

In this paper, a mental health evaluation system based on KB-SMOTE algorithm and XGBoost model was successfully established. Firstly, the questionnaire is reasonably set up and distributed to the college students majoring in physical education to fill in the questionnaire, to obtain the college students’ mental health questionnaire survey data. Secondly, the KB-SMOTE algorithm is used to optimize the data of questionnaire tuning data. The training set was utilized to establish the primary parameters of the XGBoost model. The final parameters were determined by the parameters that correspond to the highest accuracy of the XGBoost model. Finally, the model is built based on the best parameters obtained from the training set, and the optimized test data set is brought into the model to output the value of college students’ mental health assessment. The results show that the model performs best when the learning rate is 0.02, the tree depth is 5, the maximum number of iterations is 500, and the L2 regular term is 5. The XGBoost model predicts 4160 cases correctly and 286 cases incorrectly, with an overall correctness rate of 93.6%, and its corresponding ROC curve is closer to the y-axis, with an AUC value of 0.9154. By utilizing the XGBoost model, the model can accurately determine the mental health of college students. The mental health of college students can be accurately evaluated by models.
