Abstract

Many readers identify themselves as 'book lovers' and are dismayed by the technological changes affecting the format of books. Electronic publication leads us to ask, 'What is a book?' In transforming the media by which 'books' are delivered, the 'authority' of the author is undermined, but the value of the work may remain intact and even enhanced. In fact, books have been undergoing transformations in form since their invention. It will likely take a generation, however, before we can cherish the electronic book as 'object.'
