Abstract

Using 39K 1H as an example, we examine the momentum-space characteristics of rovibronic transitions in diatomic molecules. It is shown that only Franck-Condon transitions for which there is no change in the rotational quantum number have a clear interpretation in terms of the overlap of momentum wave functions; in which case, the largest Franck-Condon factors are for states which are maximally coherent over the full range of accessible momentum.
