Abstract

This paper is concerned with the rational theory of rods. We first investigate the geometry of the rod by introducing a normal coordinate system associated with the axis of the rod, and derive some results used in other parts of the paper. The equations of motion of rods are obtained from the three-dimensional field equations. The deformation of rods is studied generally. A generalized stress-strain relation is found by considering a rather simple elastic case. It is shown that the classical elastic stress distribution in a curved beam is deduced directly from the general results.
