Abstract

Four different types of localized corrosion morphologies associated with Al20Cu2Mn3 dispersoids (T phases) in an AA2195 alloy were traced using atom-resolved characterizations and quasi-in-situ experiments. At the atomic scale, we demonstrated that the rod-shaped T dispersoid is homogeneous within the grain but enriched with Cu on the side surfaces, leading to a depletion of T1 precipitates nearby and an abundance near the tips. This plays a significant role in the initiation of galvanic corrosion between T dispersoids and the matrix. Combined with heterogeneous nucleation, the subsequent redeposition of noble metal clusters results in four typical corrosion morphologies.
