Abstract

An analysis of kinematic and stress relaxation effects on the formation of large scale structural features in ice covers was performed on the basis of the field data related to the Bothnian Bay, Baltic Sea. The influence of the interaction of mechanical processes at the outer scale of the ice cover region and the inner (local) scale (≤ 10 km) associated with elements of active contact at the drifting ice-fast ice contact boundary was evaluated. Kinematic structures of ice cover fracture in the regions of an intensive shear (such as systems of parallel faults, blocks and block conglomerates) were analyzed. A rapid relaxation motion of ice at the local scale was provided, as was a twinning model for the formation of large scale kinematic structures.
