Abstract

The possibility of polaron formation within the local electron-phonon interaction model is considered. It is shown that in the 2D case unlike the continuum limit the solution of the Schrödinger equation on a discrete lattice in the adiabatic approximation gives evidence for the presence of a barrier that separates the self-localized polaron and delocalized electron states. The polaron stability and metastability regions are determined. The possibility of polaron formation in high- T c superconductors is discussed.
