Abstract

Real-space pairing of two holes in strontium titanate is investigated, depending on various model parameters. The net attraction is mediated by the high polarizability of the oxygen ions in the crystal. Pairing is found to happen for quite a wide range of plausible parameter values. Based on the fact that there are similar oxygen octahedra in the ceramic superconductors, we conjecture that this electronic pairing mechanism may well be important in these materials.
