Abstract

A theoretical comparison criterion is developed in order to evaluate a control method vs any other method with respect to a specific system. The complete modal synthesis of optimal state feedback is compared against the dead beat design using the proposed criterion. The comparison shows clear qualitative and quantitative differences. The comparison study is demonstrated via a process model of a water turbine plant. The evaluation of controllers is based on five structural measures of controllability, affectability, decoupleability, observability and robustness against parameter variations, mathematical model uncertainties and possible external disturbances.
