Abstract

A performance comparison between circuit switching packet switching systems is carried out. A fundamental feature of cellular mobile radio systems is co-channel interference among users in different cells. This causes a considerable reduction of the theoretical advantage of packet switching with respect to circuit switching. After a quick overview of circuit switching and packet switching systems, throughput expressions are derived in order to make it possible to compare the performances of the two systems on the basis of spectral efficiency. Comparisons are then performed by means of a simulation program, for both dynamic and fixed channel allocation schemes. >
