Abstract
This paper points to the ethical/evaluative positions that underlie two psychoanalytic models of development and their ideals of maturity, Freud's concept of genital maturity and Winnicott's concept of the True Self. The author also explores the nature of the justifications, if any, of these ethical/evaluative positions and addresses the implications of her findings for the assessment of the validity of other psychoanalytic developmental theories and for the application of developmental theories in psychoanalytic practice.
