Abstract

The experimental values of the refractive index for more than ninety heavy metal oxide glasses are compared with those calculated using four methods: Hauser–Wenk equation (linear combination of dielectric constant), Lichtenecker logarithmic mixture rule, Wemple–DiDomenico and Lorentz–Lorenz equations. For the Lorentz–Lorenz field factor, a simple modification is suggested which relates this one to the ionicity of a glass.
