Abstract

The geometrothermodynamic effects of the bulk viscosity and matter creation dissipative mechanisms are compared in the context of the FRW metric. It is shown that the matter creation process as described by Prigogine and coworkers can generate the same dynamic behavior as of the FRW type universes with bulk viscosity, but the models are quite different from a thermodynamic point of view. This result holds even in the more general formulation allowing specific entropy production as recently proposed in the literature. A new cosmological scenario endowed with matter creation is proposed and its properties are compared with the results of the viscous Murphy model. Analytical expressions for the temperature law, number of particles and the total entropy are given and some of its implications are also discussed.
