Abstract
The paper studies the manipulative language units used in George Orwell’s essay “Politics and the English Language” and the problem of their equi-effective translation into Armenian. Though commonly regarded as an essay, this piece of writing contains several lexical layers that can be analyzed outside of the literary genre of the essay. The unique discourse of the piece makes it a very interesting subject for translation research and analysis from the perspective of translation equivalence. Additionally, the “essay” genre of not sufficiently studied with regard to the translation process. Our research is focused on providing an adequate and equivalent translation using a variety of translation techniques. We aim to propose apt approaches for translating manipulative language units in similar texts and achieving equivalent translations in the Target Language. The four categories of words/phrases the author talks about as units leading the English language to its “demise” are: dying metaphors, operators or verbal false limbs, pretentious diction, meaningless words. We will be studying the examples brought by the author and their possible translations into Armenian.
