Abstract
It is shown how Pauli couplings can be eliminated from Kaluza-Klein theories by introducing torsion. Freeing the connection from the metric also allows time-like internal dimensions to be considered. If the torsion arises purely from Dirac fermions, an expression is derived for the Yang-Mills field strength in terms of fermion bilinears.
