Abstract
An approximate expression for determining the elastic longitudinal stress field in the neighbourhood of notches is presented. The approach is based on similarities between elastic stress fields described by two parameters; the stress concentration factor K t and the notch-tip radius ϱ. The proposed expression gives a better estimation of elastic stress distribution for wide ranges of notch configurations and geometries than currently available approximate relations.
