Abstract

We have observed ultraviolet fluorescence spectra of Cl 2/inert gas mixtures following one-photon resonant three-photon excitation of Cl 2 to the 1Σ u + ion-pair state. XeCl emission appeared at 308 nm in the presence of Xe, while collisional relaxation to the lowest lying E(O g +)ion-pair state was found to be dominant in the presence of He, Ar, and Kr. The rate constant for XeCl formation was determined to be (3.0+- 0.5) × 10 −10 cm 3 molecule −1 s −1.
