Abstract
It appears that this well-known device has never been discussed in the literature. The popular notion of how it produces such a loud report is that leather is made to hit upon leather. It is shown as a matter of fact that the sharp crack of the whip arises when its tip exceeds the velocity of sound, thus generating a shock wave. The motions executed by this device together with the speed multiplication produced make it an interesting mechanical contrivance
