Abstract

The spin-dependent diffuse LEED intensity and the resulting incoherent scattering asymmetry parameter from a single-crystal surface Pt( 1 1 1 ) partially covered with CO molecules are calculated for different values of parameters which characterize the adsorbate/substrate system. These parameters are divided into: geometrical parameters related to the local arrangement of molecules near chemisorption sites and order parameters related to the statistical distribution of the occupied chemisorption sites. The aim of this paper is to present in details the scheme of the spin-dependent DLEED intensity calculations and to show the practical use of the theory describing the spin-dependent back scattering of low-energy electrons at a single-crystal surface partially covered with a disordered overlayer of elements. It is demonstrated that the structural analysis of the disordered surface can be successfully based on the diffuse LEED experiment with polarized beam of incident electrons.
