Abstract

The American Rheumatism Association criteria of active rheumatoid arthritis are reviewed, illustrative data being drawn from a population study in Jerusalem. Consideration is given to (a) the reliability of the criteria, with special reference to the effects of observer variation and of variability in the selection and application of the criteria, and the need for greater standardization; (b) the validity of the criteria, and the influence of age, sex and ethnicity upon validity; an index of discriminatory value is proposed; and (c) alternative methods of scaling the criteria.
