Abstract
In this paper we present the design process of a real time scheduler for an onboard REal Time Processing and INternet Communication unit (RETPINC) for the members of a heterogeneous Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) formation, acting as Low Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN) relay gateways. We firstly introduce the importance of Real Time Systems (RTSs) for UAV applications emphasizing the main RETPINC‘s requirements to be met by a vehicle in order to be compatible with the proposed RTS scheduler algorithm. Furthermore, we analyze both the static and dynamic scheduler’s functionality, focusing on the rate monotonic and earliest deadline first schedulers. Finally, the proposed schedulers are subject to simulations using a scheduling simulator for real-time multiprocessor architectures.
