Abstract

Automatic maneuvering in harbors or restricted waters requires that there be a sophisticated marine traffic control system. A computer simulation method for the design of such a system is proposed. To build a truthful simulation environment, traffic is analyzed from the perspectives of both traffic management and knowledge representation. Some key concepts concerning the latter in relation to the marine traffic domain are introduced and their implementation by knowledge engineering techniques is discussed. Four levels of traffic control are considered: (1) route designation and pertinent regulations; (2) information service and advice; (3) speed scheduling and signal control; and (4) full motion scheduling. An object-based and rule-based representation is employed to model the marine traffic system.
