Abstract

The article discusses some aspects of telescope engineering which are being thrown into prominence by modern trends. The difficulties due to seeing are briefly mentioned, after which follows a discussion of optical alignment problems including the guiding of a Schmidt Telescope. Some consideration relating to the support and thermal conditions of a large mirror are reviewed. Finally some details are given of a large Dual Purpose Telescope design, and the means by which the difficulties could be met are discussed including a brief description of a novel mirror support system employing an airbag for weight relief.
