Abstract

We discuss possibilities to define the Higgs mass and self-coupling beyond the leading order in the standard model. the width Γ of the Higgs particle increases with the third power of its mass M. Above M>500GeV, Γ becomes so large that it will be difficult to determine M from the peak of the resonance. Due to the mechanism of spontaneous symmetry breaking, the Higgs mass appears not only in the propagator but determines also the value of the self-coupling of the Higgs field as well as the strength of its coupling to the (longitudinal modes of the) heavy vector bosons. In this letter we suggest to use this fact to determine the mass. Furthermore, we introduce an effective Higgs mass parameter so as to absorb the bulk of the higher order electroweak corrections.
