Abstract

It is shown that the partial differential equations derived by Solymar (1976) for volume holograms from Maxwell's equations may also be obtained with the aid of physical concepts as simple as geometrical optics, reflection at the boundary of dielectrics, and Bragg reflection. It is further deduced that harmonic and step variations in the dielectric constant lead to the same result.
