Abstract

AbstractExcept for winter months, correlation between monthly and annual mean temperatures in Central England is, higher than would be expected if all monthly mean temperatures were uncorrelated. The correlation is increased if decadal means are taken, indicating an association of monthly temperature with some factor persisting over a decade or more. This correlation is not reduced if the association of the monthly mean temperature with the monthly mean pressure field is removed. It is suggested that there must be important factors causing climatic fluctuations in England which are not closely associated with changes in the frequency of synoptic types and which do not operate in winter.
