Abstract

It is shown that the presence of trend in the exogenous variables violates some standard assumptions that govern large sample asymptotics in simultaneous equations, and that contrary to the standard analysis Ordinary Least Squares may be consistent with trended data. Necessary and sufficient conditions are derived for this to happen, and in case of consistency the asymptotic distributions for a wide class of k-class estimators are shown to be identical.
