Abstract

The purpose of this note is to review the computation of ellipse parameters for polarized electromagnetic waves. Though most of the comments and data given here pertain to the horizontal magnetic dipole (HMD) source or the vertical magnetic dipole (VMD) source, applications clearly extend to general EM exploration problems. This note was stimulated by constructive criticism offered by N. R. Paterson and F. S. Grant (personal communication) concerning the definitions of ellipticity given earlier by Ward (1967). Further, it brings attention to an error in the article by Dey and Ward (1970).
