Abstract

The paper gives the detailed calculations for finding the collapse loads of some simple structures and refers to the possible analysis of some related mechanical elements. It is assumed throughout that the material is rigid-perfectly plastic and that all deformation takes place under conditions of plane strain. Either slip line field and/or some simple upper bound solutions are given for all the cases considered. Either concentrated or distributed loading is assumed which causes significant amounts of shearing and bending stress. The cases considered include—Part 1: Stubby and tappered cantilevers; Part 2: Semi-circular bars; Part 3: Portal frame or channel sections; and Part 4: Pure bending of a bar with an Izod notch having a circular root and leading to the consideration of knee frames.
