Abstract

Bifurcation stresses and post-buckling behaviour of circular cylindrical shells under axial compression are analyzed. For shells with axisymmetrical, sinusoidal imperfections it is found that the advanced post-buckling behaviour can be such that higher loads than the bifurcation load can be supported before total collapse occurs. This holds good for relatively large imperfections (small bifurcation stresses), even in cases where the initial post-buckling behaviour indicates an unstable bifurcation.
