Abstract

The global warming potential (GWP) of structurally different MPEG PCEs was investigated considering CO2 emissions from their major raw materials (EO, methacrylic acid, NaOH). An average value of 2250 ± 143 kgCO2–eq/t was found per dry mass, with precast PCEs exhibiting slightly higher GWPs than ready-mix products. Furthermore, the CO2 emission of 40 % PCE admixture is ∼900 kg/t. In OPC based concrete, PCE contributes only negligibly to its GWP, whereas in low carbon “green” binders (PPC, LC3, PSC) PCE contribution becomes noticeable because of higher dosages; yet, PCEs do not impact the environmental attractiveness of these binders.
