Abstract

The chemical reactions in the CuO/Al system were studied via scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffractometry. It is proposed that there are two main chemical reactions in the CuO/Al system, i.e. 6CuO+2Al=3Cu 2O+Al 2O 3 and 3Cu 2O+2Al=Al 2O 3+6Cu. The produced particles are 0.5–2.0 μm in size, which are believed suitable to be the reinforcement particles in aluminum (alloy) matrix composites.
