Abstract
The paper presents for the first time buckling results for cylinders in axial compression based upon shell equations advanced by Koiter and Budiansky. The numerical results are compared to those of Flu¨gge and of Donnell, and limiting results for the infinitely long shell are also given. The principal conclusion is that the Flu¨gge buckling results are in excellent agreement with those obtained from the highly refined Koiter-Budiansky equations.
