Abstract

This paper attempts to identify distinctive British inputs to the international hydrological sciences through a survey of the development of British hydrology from the start of quantitative hydrology to recent times. The focus is on contributions which have advanced knowledge through scientific research, mainly research on surface water and to a lesser extent on groundwater, but a number of other fields are also touched on. It concludes with some thoughts on future directions.
