Abstract

On 17-19 May, 1957, the author could investigate the Japanese Crested Ibis, Nipponia nippon, nesting at Sue, Noto Peninsula, Ishikawa Prefecture. Its nesting was frst found by Mr. H. Tanaka, chief of Sue Primary School who kindly helped the author in this observation. The nest was on outer one of the red-pines growing on a hill surrounded by rice-paddies, not far from farm houses. Descriptions on the habitat, nest, two grown chicks, voices, feeding behaviour and comments on protection are given. The chick inserted its bill into that of the parent at right angle. The chicks were white in plumage, and the adult male was darker grey on the back than the females. This dark grey is apparently a nuptial colour and is not a phase as has hitherto been considered.
