Abstract
This article is concerned with the formation of singularities for the DP equation on the line. It is shown that the lifespan of solutions to the DP equation is not affected by the smoothness or size of the initial profiles, but affected by the shape of the initial profiles. Criteria guaranteeing wave-breaking for solutions with certain smooth initial profiles are described in detail and two results of blow-up solutions are established. The exact blow-up rate and the blow-up set for a class of initial profiles are also determined.
