Abstract

The CF parameters for Er ′3+:SrMoO 4, obtained from the spectroscopic studies, are employed to derive the temperature dependence of Schottky specific heat, paramagnetic susceptibility and anisotropy, and nuclear quadrupole splitting. The susceptibility and effective magnetic moment values compare favourably with experiment and likewise the extra entropy associated with Schottky specific heat agrees with free ion calculations. The Schottky specific heat exhibits two maxima at 18° and 105°K, while the lattice contribution to quadrupole splitting (0·29 μeV) is more significant than that from the valence 4 f-electrons (−0·24 μeV at low T). The g- as well as magnetic hyperfine tensors are determined and their magnitudes show nice agreement with the observations. The calculations of bulk thermal and magnetic properties of Er 3+ in LiYF 4, ScVO 4, YVO 4 and YPO 4 host lattices are also reported.
