Abstract
The functions of wear facets involve improvement of the mechanical efficiency for masticating particular kinds of foods. Also changes in the wear facets are associated with changes of feeding habits and patterns of jaw movement. On the other, recent microwear studies proved that the interaction between food and microwear is difficult to be established clearly, even though a tightly controlled relationship had been predicted. However, patterns of microwear may be used as functional indicators of the wear facets. Thus, wear facets and microwear are thought to be associated with both the morphologies of molar teeth and the functional aspects of mastication. From this point of view, the following items were selected and discussed in detail. The percentage of frequency of cavitation and of most severely excavated cases on each cusp. The rate of wear facet production. Microwear as an indicator of the functional characteristics of wear facets. The included angle of microwear between Phase I to Phase II and the length of Phase I in the trigon basin when seen in occlusal view.
