Abstract

Process modelling and computer simulation can support decision-making in manufacturing and logistics operations. A challenge in material handling systems is properly balancing the automation level considering efficiency and flexibility. This paper presents a modelling and simulation approach for evaluating alternative material handling systems. The approach is based on the combination of IDEF-SIM technique, along with an implementation using commercial simulation software. Two different material handling setups were proposed and compared, one comprising a human-based system and the other one an automation-based system. The paper outcomes substantiate the relevance of using modelling and simulation approaches for supporting strategic decision-making in industrial operations.
