Abstract

I t is well known that phenomenological features of diffractive dissociation (DD) are intui t ively described in terms of geometrical picture (x). C~ou and YANO 3) have recently presented a coherent droplet model in order to explain qualitatively DD patterns. As recognized by the authors (3), their over-simplified model necessitates sophistication. I t will, therefore, be of physicalinterest to generalize the Chou-Yang DD model by taking into account s-u crossing symmetry and the possible difference between incoming and outgoing absorption factors. This is performed for the case of pp collision by use of the opacity distribution which has yielded a remarkably good explanation of the CHOV data (3) on pp elastic scattering. The principal purpose of the present short communication is to furnish a qualitatively informative guide to DD on the basis of the shielding cut mechanism (4) of the 0ehme type. First of all, let us introduce an energy-independent asymmetry parameter 7 in order to describe the possible difference between the p and p* absorption mean free paths in hadrenie matter. This has originally been touched upon in ref. (2) and leads us to the zeroth-order eikonalized DD amplitude
