Abstract
The depth of field of acoustic imaging systems, specially in Fresnel zone, is an important performance parameter for the imaging systems. But the calculation of the depth of field for a given array is sophisticated because of a lack of analytic formulation . In this paper, an approximative analytic expression for the depth of field is derived. The curves for the depth of field plotted by a computer are also given. Computer simulation shows that the approximative analytic expression is satisfactory under condition that the number of array elements N )8. The results can be used in the design of phased arrays in the acoustic imaging systems.
