Abstract

The angular distributions of alpha particles from the N/sup 14/(d, alpha )C/sup 12/ ground state reaction were measured in the deuteron energy range of 1.4 to 2.9 Mev. The peaks from the above reaction were easily separated from the proton groups from N/sup 14/(d,p)N/sup 15/ and C/sup 12/(d,p)C/sup 13/ reactions at ang les up to 105 deg , but above 105 deg masking occurred. The angular distribution graphs show minima at approximately 80 deg and a gradual rise beyond 80 deg ; this is consistent with the results of Booth and Gibson. It is concluded that the (d, alpha ) reaction proceeds by direct interaction as well as compound nucleus formation in this low deuteron energy region. (D.L.C.)
